Power Raking

A one-stop location for customers to learn about our power raking seasonal service.

A service offering knowledge base article should include...

Power Raking

  • What is this service?
Power raking mechanically removes excess thatch from the turf.  Thatch that is half an inch thick not only blocks nutrients from reaching the soil but also allows the grass root to grow within the thatch, as opposed to the soil.
  • What is actually being done during my service?
Power raking is the process of a mechanical power raker being pushed through lawn areas in order to scour the layer of debris on the lawn using rotating flails.  By only targeting the thatch layer, the debris is loosened leaving the surface of the soil more exposed and avoiding damaging the healthy grass.  The service ends with a finishing mowing to remove the debris we are unable to remove with burlap bags.

Service Benefits

  • As a customer, why should I want this service completed?

A small layer of thatch is beneficial to your yard’s health as it can keep soil temperatures low and retain moisture.  Power raking removes excess organic debris from the lawn allowing proper soil access to water and sunlight.  Removing this thatch layer will enable your lawn to breath easier and root deeper

Optimal Timing

  • When is the best time of year to have this service completed? When does ACA offer it?
Power raking is best completed when the yard is still dormant and dry.  ACA Landscape offers appointments between February and April, pending weather.

Service Delivery

  • Who performs this service?
Power raking is performed by a crew that only performs this service. This team consists of trained experts who have the knowledge, materials, and tools to perform these power rake appointments.   They will arrive with all proper tools such as a power rake machine, burlaps, fan rakes, stand-on mower, backpack blowers, and push mower.
  • Can this crew perform additional services during my appointment?
To ensure that all clients are serviced with enough time to properly complete their appointment, our routes follow a strict schedule with appropriate time restraints.

We recommend reaching out to our office if you need to add additional services to your appointment.

In addition, this crew will not have, aerating, fertilization, overseeding, installation, or irrigation repair equipment with them for their appointments.

  • How will I know when my crew is going to arrive?

Upon scheduling an appointment with A Cut Above Landscape, you will receive a confirmation email with your appointment details. On the day of the appointment, you will receive an “our technicians are on their way”  text notification 30 minutes prior.

The text message will be sent to the phone number our client provides during scheduling.  We recommend confirming that you have selected a mobile number to ensure you receive this important message.

On the day of the service,  If the appointment is set for an AM time block, the crew will arrive between 7:00 AM - 12:00 PM. If the appointment is set for a PM time block, the crew will arrive between 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM

    Service Delivery

  • How can I prepare for my appointment?

For best results, we advise our customers not to water the ground as the soil needs to be dry.

  • Do I need to be home?
We do not require someone to be home at the time of service as long as the crew can access both front and back yards
  • What will I see at the conclusion of the appointment?
After the service is completed, our power raking service includes removal and disposal of thatch and a finishing mow. However, you may notice additional loose grass or thatch surfacing from the soil during the next couple of mows. ACA recommends bagging the first two mows following power rake service.

Timeline/Frequency

  • How long will the service take?

A power raking service takes between thirty to forty-five minutes, depending on the size of the lawn.  Our team is trained to create efficient paths to cover the entire surface of the turf, and can often complete this service in less time, with multiple technicians working simultaneously to aerate the lawn and blow the excess plugs off the sidewalk.

  • How frequently should I have this service performed? Is this a recurring service?

Power raking is recommended to be performed at most once a year, generally after the last of the snow melts away and the lawn has dried up in early Spring.
